So Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time is in my top five for books I would read and reread and reread growing up. I still have my Bantam paperback edition somewhere, but it's so old and decrepit that I'm pretty sure the scotch tape holding it together in some places has aged to the point of giving up. It's funny because someone gave me the book when I was seven or eight and I distinctly remember failing to get into it at all the first couple of attempts, and then for some reason the third time I finally made it past Mrs Which (chapter 3) and stayed up all night to finish it, cursing myself for an idiot the whole way. After which I snatched up A Wind In the Door and loved the hell out of that one too. (Interestingly enough I did not care for A Swiftly Tilting Planet, and even though I was excited when it came out Many Waters disappointed me as well. (Mostly because I just didn't care about Sandy and Dennys nearly as much as I did Meg and Charles Wallace... which I still pronounce in my head as "Wallance" even though I realized I'd been misreading it years ago.)

That said... I tend to be very forgiving of adaptations to the point where I look at people that are all like "yes but the movie failed to match the pictures in my head so I wish it didn't have the same title because ITS NOT THE SAME STORY" like they sprouted third noses. I mean... OF COURSE it doesn't match what you imagined, you didn't make the movie or TV show, chill out.

I kinda groaned when I heard Disney was taking another stab at AWiT, because hoo boy, the miniseries they did about 15 years ago was pretty dire. While I thought casting the weird creepy kid from The Ring as Charles was inspired, the rest of it was a waste of Alfre Woodard. (To be fair, it was only distributed by Disney... but still.) And then I heard Ava DuVerney was directing and I was like OOOHHHH OKAY lets see how this goes. And then I shook my head as the Greater Racist Internet lost their shit that they cast a black girl as Meg which... OMG I have feels about that, namely that I am 100% okay with one of my fictional childhood heroes LOOKING LIKE ME, I would have killed for that as a kid. (White people, get a goddamn grip, you can stand to let us have a few of your characters out of the bazillion that represent you.) And then I kinda completely forgot about it until there were some production photos released this week ahead of D23, and I was like "wait, Oprah, Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon as the Mrs Ws? Okay..." And then the teaser dropped this afternoon and HOLY SHIT.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG. I literally started hyperventilating with excitement the first time I watched it.

Cutting for book spoilers and gifs )
So I would say A+++ super hyped here, with a note of caution cause... I've been burnt by trailers before. But I think Ava DuVerney's got this one.

March can't get here fast enough.

EDIT: The omission of the period after "Mrs" for Whatsit, Who and Which was a stylistic choice by the author. Meg's mother, when referred to as Mrs. Murray, has the period. Just in case anyone was feeling like grammar checking me here.

Yeah yeah I should probably post about the Vineyard Week, but eh. It was a week on an island in a big house with both my families - by that I mean the Brownes and Team Tatro. I'll probably do a picture post a bit later.

BUT! We got back yesterday and we went out to see Guardians of the Galaxy with [livejournal.com profile] verbena76 and [livejournal.com profile] aersi, which, for a movie that seemed incredibly stupid when announced, turned out to be really really fun and squeeworthy and quite worth the ticket price. I'll cut some of the spoilery things.

The meeting of the Tiny Nerdlings was accomplished today and other than one major meltdown where the bossy stubborn six year olds butted heads over how to play a game they made up about dragons in space* and about 20 minutes of "EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE" sulking, all three kids from that point got on like they'd known each other in previous lives. Yes, all three - Kidzilla to my surprise wanted to come out to the playground with us, and she and C got on quite well. And Drew and Matt got along as well. So mission accomplished there.

After getting an appropriate level of hot and sweaty at the park (My gods, the humid today Eeeeeeuuuuggggggh) we wandered over to Flayvors of Cook farm where ice cream and visiting the cows happened.

Apparently being sniffed by a calf tickles like whoa.

C gave both Kidzilla and Beastie hugs when it was time to part ways and all three of them seem enthusiastic about meeting up again.

Aaaagh they're all so damn cute I can't stand it.

Also can I just squee over Google+'s auto-awesome feature? take a bunch of photos in sequence, or that all look reasonably similar, and G+ will either animate them or arrange them contact sheet style. This has resulted in all sorts of unexpected animated hilarity when I upload pics. Also in this case, rampant cute.

* from what I can tell; they tried to explain it to me and it was just complicated kid word salad.

Apparently the first two eps of Avatar: Legend of Korra are available on iTunes, or at least that was the explanation [livejournal.com profile] cell23 gave me for how it magical evil internet mind forced its way onto my iPad and thus onto Monstervision.

Y'all. Y'all. Somewhere in some obscure file is a document outlining the limits to how much ass can be kicked inand by a kids' cartoon and another one explaining just by how far Legend of Korra surpassed them.

Seriously, I'm all over here like

quick thoughts, cut for possible spoilery goodness )

One bonus was that [livejournal.com profile] cell23 enjoyed it as well, which was a nice surprise considering how ehhhhh he is on A:TLA, but it makes sense once he pointed out that Shaolin steampunk was kind of awesome and also that the vaguely 1930s-ish urban setting of A:LOK is very much golden age /birth of the superhero i can kinda see why this series would appeal to him more than the mythic journey to save the world setting of A:TLA.

I almost feel like A:LOK is aiming for an older audience this time around. While the animation style and the slapstick are still intact from the previous series, i feel like the series has matured, and not just because Korra is clearly a few years older than Aang was and is more her own person at the beginning of the show, where Aang and his buddies were still pretty much kids struggling to find themselves oer the course of their journey. There is also a sense of underlying grittiness to the setting which i hope to see more of... And i like the idea that Hooray, the world's been saved, now what? Worlds don't stay saved forever, alas. Which is why i kinda like [livejournal.com profile] cell23's idea that this is going to be more of a superhero tale than a "traditional" legend.

ANYWAY. Tl;dr, Legend of Korra is pretty much as awesome as it was promised to be.

just needed to put that here for safekeeping. And, you know, to terrorize y'all's neighborhood.

Fullscreen this. You'll thank me.

Holy shit.

I need to go listen to "We're In This Together" about sixty bazillion times now.

After seeing this posted in the booj and laughing my ass off as I clicked to save it:

I'm thinking I am grossly overdue for a gif party. Plus I need a little bit of a pick-me-up today. Nothing wrong, just feeling under the weather and draggy today. :) THIS CAN BE CURED WITH THE POWER OF JESUS GIFS.

Give it your best shot people.

K nerds, I have a request.

I've hit the 2 day mark here. Which means that from here out it's probably going to be rough going in the brainmeat department. Trying to stave this off by taking care of myself when I can. I also was just reminded what day it is a couple minutes ago. Insult to injury regarding already differential weather in my head, so now I'm cranky and self-loathing on top of everything.

I need silly stuff today. Links, YouTube, gifs, whatever you've got. The occasional reassurance that i'm not a terrible human being and that I'll get through today/this week/this year/all of it okay wouldn't hurt either.

Halloween = new eggs. Or rather, a chance to get last year's Halloween eggs. So I got two of em. :)

Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

Honestly I think they're the most visually pleasing eggs ever. They look like fine quality butterscotch.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] rhipowered's comment on my last post, I'm on my way towards breaking my personal rule against e-books. I installed Stanza onto my iPod so I can read Cryoburn. Yes, my need for Miles is so potent that I will willingly defile myself and my reading experience with a filthy e-reader app. [barrowman] VORKOSIGAN! *shakes fist* [/barrowman] :| I don't think this is in any way a permanent change though - my disdain level for anything but ink and paper books remains very high.

This morning I was attempting to explain to [livejournal.com profile] htl_1126 the force of nature that is [livejournal.com profile] omgwtfaninja, which of course led to me linking over to a certain youtube involving a mailbox and Optimus Prime. (A picture, after all, is worth 1000 words, and at 30 frames per second it says plenty.) This led me to doing some fun fooling around via Imageready and GIFSoup, and now I have an animated gif that rather perfectly expresses "YAY SEXYTIME." Or something.

YAR YAR HUMP HUMP (nsfw/l) )

Yeah, try getting that image out of your head now. :)

For my Mad Men people:

Wow, that works so well on so many damn levels it's insane. Thats the fun thing about mashups - once in a while you'll get two pieces of music that you never would have dreamed went together and then BAM ear candy overdose.

HOLY CRAP ITS [livejournal.com profile] kittikattie's BIRTHDAY! *flail* CLERFAIRIES DANCE FOR YOU.

Quietly rainy day today. I'm tending to work stuff and staving off a coffee deprivation headache while engaging in a Netflix fueled mother of all Law and Order: SVU marathons. Later I plan to break the shit out of the GD library. (Before anyone panics, its a PHP graphics class library, not an ACTUAL library.) You?

Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

I usually post some introspective crap up in this bitch about my birthday and holy crap surviving another year and wtf, but I don't have it in me this year. It's very possible that [livejournal.com profile] cell23 just scared whatever deep thinky post I was going to insert here out of my brain entirely by singing Happy Birthday a la Marilyn Monroe serenading the president while... I think what he just did was a striptease, technically....

32, bitches. GIF PARTY TIME.
