The long delayed media consumption post
I've been sort of working on this post on and off on my iPod for months now; it was getting ridiculous. So in no particular order, what have I been watching lately?
Torchwood: Miracle Day
I feel like this series could have been excellent as a miniseries like CoE, and in fact in a lot of places it felt like they added additional plot/scenes just to pad it out to 10 eps when 4-6 would have done. There were entire episodes that were excellent (Jack's 1920s romance with Angelo) followed by eps that simply rehashed the already existing plot points. Much as i enjoyed Evil Bill Pullman (when did he get so old?) he and his leggy red haired handler felt more like convenient plot devices than real characters and the story could have done quite well without them and the additional squick factor of finding yourself rooting for a child molester at various points. Also unsure about the end. NGL, I was glad Esther bit it in the end, but i had been waffling over whether I actually liked Rex or not and i am definitely unsure about him gaining Jack's freaky immortality/fixed pointness. So yeah, some good concepts, some great sequences of Gwen being badass, a couple of excellent shots of John Barrowman's fine fine manbooty... Very hit or miss execution. Which would all be forgivable were it not for the excellence of CoE, so I know it can do much much better.
True Blood
I think Pam said it best: "I AM SO SICK OF SOOKIE AND HER PRECIOUS FAIRY VAGINA AND HER RIDICULOUSLY STUPID NAME! FUCK SOOKIE!" Seriously, best line in the series EVAR.
Sookie hate aside, this seemed to be the season of Dangling Plot Thread other than the whole Vampires vs Aunt Petunia conflict. Which, other than the fact that Fiona Shaw acted the fuck out of that role, felt pretty silly even for True Blood. (Also that wicca shop set seemed a lot like they repainted/expanded the Magic Box from Buffy. Either that or all witchy shops on tv/movies have the same general layout.) As usual, the more interesting stuff was happening aside from the main plot: Jason and Jessica hooking up after his traumatic experience with the drug running werehayseeds (that GhostDaddy shit was fucked up, yo), Arlene and Terry's maybe/maybe not possessed baby, Sam's life continuing to suck right as it was starting to look up, the whole change in power structure with the werewolves... yeah. And oh Lafayette! Seems like the further a plot gets away from Sookie, the more interesting it is. Hell even Beel got less eyerollingly boring once he got away from the precious fairy vagina and became King of Louisiana. Though I'll admit amnesiac puppy-vamp Eric was kind of adorkable. But yeah this season didn't seem so much like an actual season so much as setting up dominoes for the next. Considering that was my feeling at the end of last season as well, this is frustrating. True Blood needs to shit or get off the pot.
We're not even talking about Tara getting her head shot off. Nope. Didn't happen. La. La. La. Fuck you Alan Ball.
Doctor Who
I very much enjoyed this season, though I admit I think I preferred River as an enigma. Certain aspects of her origin story and the way they were explained didn't quite line up with with the bad ass sexy confidence we'd previously seen and dismissing it as "oh it was earlier in her timeline, she's not there yet" falls kinda flat. So yeah there's a nagging unhappy feeling there. That said i felt that some of the one episode stories were stronger than the main plot; I loved the return of Craig (plus Stormaggedon, lol) and Amy's 40 year imprisonment was fantastic as well.
Louie
Watched the first season of this on Netflix. I love me some Louis CK but oooh, this show. It's funny, don't get me wrong, but it's funny in a relentlessly and brutally punching you in the too-close-to-home spots so that you laugh to keep from curling up in a fetal ball and devouring pints of ice cream. Not for the faint of heart or sanity, for sure.
Side note:
cell23 pretty much recreated the route Louie walks in the opening titles while we were in NY just for shits and giggles. Also to see if anyone good was playing the Comedy Cellar that night.
Breaking Bad
I was not actually expecting to like this show, but after
cell23 and I tried the pilot out on Netflix I'm kinda hooked. Though I hope Bryan Cranston's resemblance to Edward James Olmos stops twigging me; my brain kept supplying Stand and Deliver and BSG jokes throughout the episode.
Sons of Anarchy
This season lost my attention at episode 5; I'll get back to it at some point. Somehow club internal drama and Juice's contrived racial angst wasn't quite doing it for me... Which sucks because the season opener was jaw dropping, followed by four episodes of ho hum. Feh.
Archer
...should run away from home and become a pirate king more often. Just sayin.
Beavis and Butthead
I am ridiculously happy this is back on the air, y'all don't even know. I am also ridiculously happy that the show has not changed at all - to the point where they have to use the same aspect ratio because they are reusing animation from the early 1990s. I was a little dubious about the fact that they are watching reality TV as well as music videos in this latest incarnation, but it works. Mostly because "Jersey Shore" is about as ridiculous as a Katy Perry vid. Can't wait until they see Lady Gaga or Janelle Monae, lol. Even the actual side plot segments are just as hilarious as they were - their completely misguided attempt to become werewolves in order to score had me crying with laughter, as well as their misinterpretation of what it means to ask a girl's father for her hand. Ooh ooh, and? Beavis is allowed to like fire again. My inner pyromaniac is pleased by this.
Reminds me, I do need to check out the "Pop-up Video" reboot as well. Lord, too much TV, too little time.
Thundercats/My Little Pony
Yes, as you all know i've hopped the pony bandwagon. I'm shocked at myself. But i wasm't really expecting much out of the reboots of either of these cartoons and have been pleasantly surprised by both. Need to finish up both series (thus far) but liking what I've seen.
Parks&Rec/Community
Parks seems to be opting for a slow build to the season, which isn't at all a bad thing, as each episode does have at least one major giggle in it (Ben crying n the Batman suit being a major one). Still somehow not as grabbed by Leslie's bid for city council this season, which is a problem because I dont want to be invested in Tom's B plot and yet I am and that's a problem because Aziz Ansari gets on my nerves like whoa.
Community, amazingly enough, keeps surpassing itself. First with adding John Goodman to the cast as the villainous foil to the Dean. ("Happy pansexual imp" may be my new favorite phrase.) Then with making Inspector Spacetime a running joke. And then... well, let's just say if "Remedial Chaos Theory" doesn't finally get them an Emmy i will be majorly disappoint, son.
Whew, does that cover everything? I think so.
