Thinking of bringing back my weekly podcast after the move. Who'd be interested in listening if I did?

Reason this came up: I was brainstorming a list of a certain class of early 90s hip-hop that I can't really quantify... they have a certain sound to them, I guess is all. But so far what's on the list:

House of Pain - Jump Around
Onyx - Slam
Black Sheep - The Choice is Yours (this or that)
Cypress Hill - Insane in the Membrane
Snap - The Power
Rob Base/DJ E-Z Rock - It takes two
Public Enemy - 911 is a joke/fight the power

Any other ideas, fellow "we actually remember what was on the radio 20 years ago" people?

3rd Bass? Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy?

I'm gonna have to set up a Pandora station based off "The Gas Face" now, aren't I, dammit?

OOH 3rd Bass thank you!

POP GOES THE WEASEL WHEN THE WEASEL GOES POP

Maybe I should just call this mix "Shit Andee used to desperately wish she could order off The Box but knew better than to ask"

The Box as in the video music channel?? I really miss that one.

[identity profile] anagramofbrat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS. Seriously, there was one birthday I had where all I wanted was to be able to order three songs off it lol you should have seen the side eye my mother gave me about that one.

Heh

Pop Goes The Weasel is on the Master List for Throwback Thursday for about a month from now, lol :)

Gas Face and or Brooklyn Queens would be the ones I remember from them.

Gas Face, Steppin to the Am. I have that album...somewhere.

Young MC - Bust a Move

And how can you have early 90's without MC Hammer?

[identity profile] anagramofbrat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
*notes* MC Hammer's not _quite_ the same sound as the above.

[identity profile] head58.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
No, YOU bust a move!

Meanwhile, stuff:

[identity profile] bellarisa.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Mama Said Knock You Out and Jinglin' Baby, LL Cool J

The Humpty Dance and The Way We Swing, Digital Underground

Pretty much everything off Naughty By Nature's first two albums

Dance For Me, Queen Latifah

...I have more but babies are callin' ...

[identity profile] anagramofbrat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I might have to put in a vote for Skee-lo's "I wish."

[identity profile] bellarisa.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
ROFL that's NEXT WEEK, along with "I Gotta Man" for the Bonus Track :-D

[identity profile] head58.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Salt n Peppa?

[identity profile] head58.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 04:32 pm (UTC)(link)
ooh, "No Diggety" by Das EFX just came on my last.fm station. Add that to the list!

[identity profile] telepresence.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
As I look at that list it mostly feels like the unifying theme is kind of rap-as-power pop. Big sound, aggressive but not "underground". It's like power anthem rap. It's like...the rap songs that get played at football games after something by Queen.

[identity profile] telepresence.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
This came a later but I'm think "Rock Superstar" by Cypress Hill maybe?

[identity profile] telepresence.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Rockstar by N.E.R.D.?

Yes, no? Wrong idea?

[identity profile] anagramofbrat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah that works. You know, shit you'd find on Jock Jams, only without the organ/cheerleader interludes.

[identity profile] telepresence.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 03:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I should stress, I don't mean any of that pejoratively. I love big dramatic arena rock. Queen and Journey and whatnot. If a song like The Choice Is Yours is wrong I don't want to be right.

[identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you feel about the still-constant playing of "Rock and Roll Part 2"

[identity profile] anagramofbrat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure whom you are adressing, but yeah, much as I can't listen to Chris Brown without squicking, I can't do it with Gary Glitter either. Or watch Sean Connery, Roman Polanski or Mel Gibson movies without needing a shower afterwards. Which is why I hate it when people make things I like and then turn out to be douchebags and ruin it.

[identity profile] telepresence.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I never liked the song very much. It doesn't really pump me up the way other songs in the "stadium rock" category do. Gary Glitter himself being a scumbag is just the sprinkles on top.

[identity profile] lysscat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw man, what did Sean Connery do? I'm out of the loop on this one, I guess.

[identity profile] anagramofbrat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEARS ago (like pre TMZ/social network internet, lol) he was interviewed on barbara walters and said straight up that it's okay to slap women around if they provoke it, "but it's not okay if the fist's closed."

,,,yeah, no.

[identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:36 pm (UTC)(link)
You should ask [livejournal.com profile] cell23 to do his impression of Sean Connery playing a Vietnamese hooker. I think he was part of that evening.

[identity profile] anagramofbrat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
*facepalm* no... I think I've heard this before. And had managed to block it out until now, thanks.

[identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Terribly sorry. Didn't mean to bring back past trauma.

[identity profile] anagramofbrat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
s'ok, inappropriate mental trauma is kinda part of the whole "Date Tatro Boy At Own Risk" deal. I've accepted this long ago.

[identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I was asking [livejournal.com profile] telepresence. I thought I'd responded to his thing about stadium rock.

[identity profile] harinezumi.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I have no problem with consuming media created by people I hate and/or people who hate me. I just don't pay for it.

[identity profile] anagramofbrat.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
you know, that's a fair point....

[identity profile] badrahessa.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 04:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I wanna listen

[identity profile] nekosensei.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 04:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes! I would listen!

[identity profile] masteradept.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Rhythm is a Dancer- Snap
C.R.E.A.M- Wu-Tang
My mind is playing tricks on me- The Geto Boyz
Everyday People- Arrested Development
Scenario- Tribe Called Quest
Is It Good To You- Heavy D and the Boyz
Bacdafucup- Onyx

I miss good Hip hop and rap...the modern stuff does nothing for me..

[identity profile] lynxreign.livejournal.com 2010-08-05 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think I have anything to offer for this musical genre. I am sorry to have failed you.

OMG YES PLZ.

[identity profile] grinninfoole.livejournal.com 2010-08-07 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
Never, ever, ever play anything by Vanilla Ice. It's the musical equivalent of hunting with Dick Cheney.
