In today's "Living in the future" news

I finally figured out a use for my Christmas Kindle* that does not make the baby Kal-El** cry:

Who doesn't need her sheet reprinted tonight? THIS TIEFLING PSION BITCH, that's right.

Already planning on tossing my WoD character sheets on here too, as well as some other game related PDFs I've got laying around that I don't feel like reading on my computer. Why hello there, NERDBOX3000***, how are you today?

* Insert usual rant about my irrational luddite hatred of e-readers. But since the gods have a sense of humor, I ended up with one for Christmas.

** [livejournal.com profile] cell23 and I watched Superman: the Movie last night. It was a lot better than I expected, but that may have been because I was watching [livejournal.com profile] cell23 react to it more than the actual movie, which proved just as interesting.

*** aaaaand name acquired.

I have a general hate for e-readers, too. I mean, I can see situations where they'd come in handy, but I still can't imagine opting to pick up one of those over an actual book. And a world without libraries and bookstores is NOT one that I want to live in.

Also, a lot of things in this article pissed me off. Does this mean I'm an old fogey who is against change?

My mom had asked me if I wanted a (used) one for XMAS and I was like "no, I like paper books"

but but but

NERDGASM
I may have to rescind that. Because I have 15 FILES of characters.
OMG, the GMing possibilities.

It's pretty good with PDFs, NGL. A lot easier to read than on my Ipod, that's for sure.

I love paper books, but I want a Kindle. Why? So I can take my book collection with me to Australia, that's why. There's no way I'm going to be able to afford to ship my entire library overseas when I go. :(

[identity profile] sixswordsamurai.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Can you send me one? *sniffles*

[identity profile] sixswordsamurai.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and your Tiefling Psion ain't got shit on my Eladrin Warlock. "Eat some Fae Magic Mother fucker!!" :-P

That's pretty awesome having seen the piles of paper used for character sheets.
More awesome still is the realization that I'm not the only avid reader who doesn't see the draw to e-readers.

[identity profile] bottledgoose.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah no. I like having a good old fashioned ink and paper book to carry around. It makes no sense to me because I'm perfectly okay with having a little device to carry around my music and streaming my movies, but books I'm not as willing to go digital on. I think I like knowing that I'll have at least one form of entertainment left (besides solo exploration) that doesn't require electricity in any form. Just in case there's an apocalypse or something.

I showed coureton, he's wondering how you got it in there?

[identity profile] cell23.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
Lots of lube. Otherwise, create a PDF document from the original, drag and drop onto device.

[identity profile] bottledgoose.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Kindles read PDFs dropped into their document folder. If you've got a way of making your character sheet from whatever game into one, you're golden.

In this case, [livejournal.com profile] avalon616 has access to Character Builder so I printed it to PDF, added a few pages of notes from a converted Word doc, and was good to go.

[identity profile] oneforellis.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
But you can't edit it can you? Where do you keep track of stuff one would pencil in?

[identity profile] bottledgoose.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly I don't tend to pencil stuff on to the sheet anyway, I tend to note things like health and HP and what have you elsewhere and keep the sheet nice. There's a fair amount of aversion to pencils/eraser damage at play for that, also having been completely spoiled by jotting stats down on the game board in whiteboard marker during combats in [livejournal.com profile] avalon616's game. So not being able to directly edit isn't so much of an issue for me. Having my feats and spells written out so I can check how they work for the fifteenhundredth time, though, that's invaluable.

Is your character's name Nightmare?

[identity profile] bottledgoose.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 02:27 pm (UTC)(link)
heh, yeah.

[identity profile] cell23.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Tieflings often have a tendency to name themselves after concepts and then to attempt to embody that concept. More sensible people would pick less foreboding names.

[identity profile] oneforellis.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've taken character names off of food ingredient lists, I have no tower from which to judge.

[identity profile] bottledgoose.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So what were Xanthan Gum's stats?

[identity profile] cell23.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Tremble, mortals, beneath the shadow of the greatest supervillain of all time... Sorbitol!"

Also:
Shopkeeper: The toppings contain potassium benzoate.
[Homer looks puzzled]
Shopkeeper: ...That's bad.
Homer: Can I go now?

[identity profile] bottledgoose.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"The dread pirate Benzoate takes no survivors!"

[identity profile] bottledgoose.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Sensible, bah. I am many things, both in character and out, but sensible has never been one of them.

[identity profile] harinezumi.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 05:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually put clear tape over the parts that get modified a lot, like the hitpoint box, and then write/erase on that. Greatly extends the character sheet's longevity.

[identity profile] cell23.livejournal.com 2011-01-07 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
We got a clear lucite sheet that goes on the table over the terrain tiles. Makes it so much easier to mark off zones, difficult terrain, what have you. It also serves as a good workspace for combat or skill challenges.
