For something I basically threw together in a couple of hours (counting the half hour I spent coming up with twenty rhyming couplets for clues) the Valentine scavenger hunt was a smashing success, and earned me a half hour of watching [livejournal.com profile] cell23 and the kids figuring out the clues together and then tearing around the house at warp speed once they had, leaving a trail of paper clues and envelopes in their wake.

This was not the first time I'd put together one of these for them - a few years ago I did a smaller one where each clue contained a puzzle piece - the combined puzzle was a picture of where they were going that day. They loved the hell out of that one and bugged me for another one for a while. I keep underestimating their ability to figure things out, as they blew through this one in a half hour, but they didn't seem to mind, especially given the raucous amount of candy in the offering.

I do love setting up scavenger hunts though.* Someday when I have time and an actual testing platform, I'll finish writing/programming SQWRRL - the ARG I started a year or so ago. I've been thinking about the characters and mechanics of that again lately, but man do I not have time to deal with that right now.

Only Tangentially related - I wish someone had told me stickers have a "Use By" date back when I was still rabidly collecting them. I still haul out my old Stickapotamus collection for things like this, but some of them are so old (think 10+ years) that they've either completely fused to their paper backing or have no stick left at all. Not that I need anything else to spend money on, but maybe I should think about refreshing my collection a bit.

Today's going to be low key - kiddos, beading, maybe rebraiding my hair (winter has not been kind to it) and/or also maybe getting a little more work done on my website so I can actually, you know. Reopen it.

* interestingly enough I'm not so big on the actual "hunt" part of things, mostly because I get easily frustrated if I can't figure out the clues instantly. Exception being letterboxing - one of the things I'd like to do once smartphoned up is take that up again. built in compass and GPS for the win.
