And here we go again...

Which sums up so much, really. In a very short time last week, the following things happened:
  • I successfully sold one of Jana's design bindings (my personal fav, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde) to a book collector. Not the institution I had hoped for but still good news and very helpful.I also managed to rehome/sell a bunch of her reference books and remaining tools with someone else who was one of her students and a colleague.
  • I got news that Jana is getting a posthumous Laura Young Award from the Guild of Bookworkers this year in Iowa City. One the one hand, this is "Yay! Awesome!" and very well-deserved, On the other, I am kind of resentful that this recognition couldn't have come in the Before Times so she could have enjoyed it, given that was when she did the bulk of the work that is being honored. But so it goes. Now I have to figure out how I'll fit in a trip to Iowa City in October, especially as I may be unemployed.
  • Because that is the other thing that happened on the same afternoon last week. I got word that my contract wasn't going to be extended so I'm out on 7/2. On the one hand, this fairly toxic project was starting to be bad for my mental health, especially after what I've been through already this year. On the other, super fond of the paychecks and not yet in a position for retirement to be more than a good joke amongst friends. And, of course, Readercon (midJuly) has been a goal for ages and is partially paid for and Worldcon in Seattle (mid August) is paid for with the exception of hotel, food and sundries and I have a roommate and a friend to travel on the train with, so cancelling is not on the table.
  • I did go to 4th Street Fantasy over the weekend and had a perfectly nice time with friends. And I wore my Alice B. Readers' medal pinned to my chest like a Napoleanic general all weekend because I'm not going to get another lifetime achievement award (in all likelihood) so I'd best appreciate it while I can.
  • I had a really nice queer elder moment this weekend. A local young person is trying to spin up a homemade scones delivered by bike business that I have ordered from a few times and they reached out on Sunday to ask if they could stop by to give me some scones since they had extra from their last sale. We had a nice chat and i enjoyed the intergenerational bonding. Will try and do more of this!
  • I watched "Ballerina" and "In the Lost Lands" in the last week and they are both terrible in different ways, but also action-packed and entertaining fun. Very, very high body count and quite gory if those are things you wish to avoid.
  • Things that would be helpful as I embark on another effin' round of job hunting:
  1. Job referrals for analyst gigs - as much WFH as possible. Shu is not doing well and I'd need to pay someone to check on him otherwise (this is what I do when I have all day events, given his shot schedule).
  2. Check out the Pride StoryBundle - buy one if you can, encourage your friends to do the same, recommend it to others and boost if you can't buy. Melissa and I split the curator's fee so the more we sell, the better we do. It also means more money for the publishers and authors as well as for Rainbow Railroad so very much a win/win.
  3. Hire me! I edit, I coach people on publishing and marketing, I can format ebooks, give talks, teach classes and workshops and all that good stuff. I write fiction, nonfiction and media tie-ins - invite me to write or edit for your project!
  4. I have a Patreon that supports both me and Queen of Swords. The tiers are nonsense at this point - everybody gets something and any amount helps.
  5. Buy books or get your library to buy Queen of Swords Press titles. Reviews and recommendations help lots too!
  6. Stay tuned - I'll be putting stuff up for sale online, including finally getting Jana's boxes up on my Ko-fi. I'm looking at article pitches and CFS and crowdfunding a Queen of Swords Press project. Oh, and finally writing that next novel and digging into writing a new short story collection and more.
Am I aware of what's going on in the outside world? Yes. Doing what I can to make things better where I can, but I also gotta consider what happens to me, my cats and so forth so that needs to be the priority. Hugs all around if you need them.

Everything I wanted to do was either rained out or closed INCLUDING the freaking mall. No lie, after giving up on anything I wanted to do I settled for going to a restaurant I wanted to for years (for lunch) I decided to just hit TJ Maxx/Homegoods and turns out they're remodeling and that whole part of the strip mall was closed. You have to be kidding. (and I didn't check the first restaurant I wanted to try and it is only open for dinner. head desk)

I did get some yummy food and coffee at Shouf's and later for dinner I had deep fried pickles and spicy peach wings (those were yummy too) My birthday pie was the same premade bake it yourself pie we've had many times but this fruits of the woods pie must have had the oldest hardest rhubarb in it, so a disappointing end to a disappointing day.

I hope [personal profile] thoughtsbykat, my birthday twin has a good one too.

I did get a cool set of horror comics from Betty, looking forward to reading that. And there are things on the way from other friends.

I almost forgot fannish 50's women of fandom (and I accidentally skipped The Owl House) So let's do Prodigal Son

One of the best things about this crime drama was the sheer amount of strong, competent women. I couldn't pick between Dani Powell and Dr. Edrisa Tanaka. Both are capable, intelligent women. Edrisa is my favorite by a thin margin with one major exception.

In reality if I am anyone on this show, it's Edrisa. She's intelligent, talky, sex positive, into threesomes and bondage and cuddle parties and has my original dream job. I loved her. She was funny. She was caring and fiercely protective of her friends.

So the issue with her, the overly flirty nonsense that crossed the boarder into harassment multiple times (and coupled with the fact it's also a negative Asian stereotype, though when the character was conceived she was Irish based on the name change) Even when it was obvious others on the team were uncomfortable with it, she didn't stop (it did lessen somewhat as the season went on) And she is never confronted about it (or sent to HR) That was disappointing.

Dani was much easier for me to write. (I couldn't capture Edrisa's comedy well). Another smart character, tough and also kind going from not enemies to lovers with Malcolm but annoyed to best friends. I wish we had gotten more of her back story. She had some much potential. She didn't require the men to help her but when they had her back she didn't act like she thought it was patriarchal bullshit, just a partner helping another partner. About the only time I was truly annoyed with her was when she tried to interfere with Gil getting together with Jessica (her reasoning was not based entirely in fact) It was meant as her protecting a father figure but it fell short.

I'm still very bitter about this show's early cancellation. I think my injury played into it. I was in the hospital watching Pson, watching Fox bragging it was the #1 show on TV for weeks and then at midterm they suddenly stopped promoting it and a few weeks later it was gone taking the cast by complete shock. I miss these women.

Speaking of women in fandom, this is mostly from [personal profile] spikedluv. Yesterday [personal profile] used_songs brought it to my attention that There is a Jessica Fletcher action figure Had to share that

Mostly because I have been depressed, panicked, defiant, planning escape, ignoring the news, frozen in fear, crying, seizing joy, and so forth. I'm not getting into the current events because everything sucks. I'm trying to focus on right here, right now, and living without as much extra stress and fear as I can, but some days are harder than others.

But I've done things!
  • I earned my TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certification.
  • With that coursework, I renewed my elementary teaching license, since it had lapsed in 2011.
  • I kept my job somehow (our federal contract was okay).
  • I researched so much about visas for anywhere. Albania! It was good enough for Tom Riddle, could it be good enough for me? There's a beach and cities, and Americans automatically get a one year tourist visa.
  • Went on a spiritual birding weekend (Zen and the Art of Birding) in a beautiful place.
  • Started doing some mixed media collage.
  • Read a whole lot of books.
  • Watched a whole lot of media.
  • Bought a whole lot of physical media to have all for myself no matter what happens to streaming services (or my ability to pay for them).
  • Healed from a stupid injury to both my wrists/tendons.
  • Started a new medical program for pelvic floor therapy that seems to be helpful already.
  • Become a lot more active at church (the Unitarian kind, not the Jesus kind) - I may be teaching Sunday school in the fall. I really like focusing on my community.
So really, a lot of really good things in the midst of horrible things. God damn, I wish things weren't so horrible.

There's just something delightful about a cat caught mid-blep. That magical moment when their tiny tongue peeks out for no apparent reason. It's as if these furry felines are so busy plotting world domination (or their next snack) that they forget to put their tongue back where it belongs. Whether it's a smol tip of the tongue or a full-on tongue-out-tuesday moment, bleps always seem to leave us hoomans grinning from ear to ear.

Perhaps your cat is pawsing to contemplate life's great mysteries: why do birds taunt them from the window? Why does the can opener sound so exciting? Or maybe, just maybe, they're silently judging us with a tongue out for extra sass. Let's be honest, a blepping cat is the ultimate combination of cute and comical. It's like they're saying, "Yes, I'm majestic, but I can still be adorkable."

Whatever the reason behind the blep, these kitties sure know how to keep us smitten. Their silly little slip-ups remind us that even the most purrfect feline overlords have their quirky moments and we wouldn't have it any other way!

MOOSE

 speck of moose in water
Image: squint at the circled bit. It is a moose.

As previously noted, my family always jokes when we're up north about all the moose we're NOT seeing. We religiously trek up to Moose Viewing and happily see no moose. But, this trip was not, in fact, mooseless.

On Friday morning, Shawn and I were up before six am, per usual. We like to go down to the dock and just take in the absolute silence (by which I actually mean all the racket of the birds.) So, there we are just staring off into the lake. The guy in the dock next to us is quietly getting his motorboat ready to head off for some fishing, and Shawn says--somewhat quietly because Bearskin is very strict about it's quiet hours, which are until 10 am, "What's that?"

I look over to where she is pointing and my brain registers an image that is something like this: \---/

I think: kayak? It's certainly moving at speeds. But the little up parts aren't going up and down. It's also making hardly any splashs. I offer "Kayak?" just as Shawn says, "Some weird piece of driftwood?" But then something clicks for both of us and we realize the sticky-up bits are EARS and we're like, "Oh! OH! It's a MOOSE!"

I honestly tend to forget that moose are powerful swimmers.

Even though just the day before, Bob, the owner of Bearskin, had been telling me about how the moose come right down to the water's edge to calve in May because, if a bear or other predator is around, the mama and newborn can make a quick escape into the water. Which is just WILD considering how massive and ungainly these animals look. Like, they look like they should flail around and sink, not glide around a deep lake like they're fully motorized.

Anyway, I try to get the guy next to us excited, but apparently toxic masculinity means all he can do is grunt, "Huh. Yeah. Moose," like he sees moose swimming in a deep lake every other day, ho hum. Later, however, I hear him telling his family about the moose, so I guess even the toughest of the tough guys aren't fully immune to how F*CKING AWESOME MOOSE ARE.

And, yeah, the picture sucks. No one has a good telephoto lens on their camera in my house of cheap phones, so you'll just have to deal with Shawn's best effort. Trust me, when you're looking with your actual eyes it was much more clearly moosey. But, I won't lie. It does look like one of those photos trying to convince you that there is a Loch Ness Monster.

That was kind of the pinnacle of the day and it was only quarter to seven.

I am hard pressed to remember the rest of the day. IIRC, it was very windy after that calm cold morning, but after seeing the moose in the water we all kind of wanted to be sure to get out in the canoe. Mason and I fought the wind all the way around "the point" as we call it, but it was ridiculously windy. But, that is what novels and a roaring fire are for.

Our final day was Saturday. Shawn and I canoed at an insanely early hour again (now looking for WATER MOOSE) but saw none. We did have a lovely, perfectly calm day, however, to do our gentle gliding. I miss it so much right now, it's not even funny.

On the way back, I really, really wanted to try to get stamps for State Parks. There are a ton up there and I have decided that, since my passport book is a life project, it's okay to run in, get a stamp. So long as the plan is to explore the parks "for real" some other time. There are, for instance, several state parks that I DON'T have stamps for that Mason and I spent hours exploring. Even so, perhaps it's cheating? I have zero intention of actually trying to get a plaque or whatever the prize is if you fill up a book, so it doesn't feel that way to me.

Regardless, we EARNED the Cascade Falls State Park stamp, holy crap.

At first, I had intended to just go in, get a stamp and maybe a patch, but I got to talking to the ranger there (a pine marten murdered a whole bunch of her chickens, "Cute little guy, though!" she said cheerily in a fully Fargo accent,) and she convinced us that it was worth trying to see the falls.

Cascade Upper Falls
Image: Cascade Upper Falls. Worth the Detour!!

The walk up to see this from the Trail Center was 0.5 miles, but we got confused by the idea of the "loop hike" to see both upper and lower falls and so Mason and I proceded to get... well, not lost, but turned around by the map several times. This would not normally be a problem but the hikes at Cascade River State Park are along a massive gorge and so there are a lot of stairs and extremely steep slopes. I did alright? But thank goodness I'd been practicing, and honestly, nothing can compare to the stairs at Judge C. R. Magney/Devil's Kettle. Poor Shawn decided to stay behind again ans started to worry when this very tiny hike turned into forty-five minute hike.

Lower falls at Cascade State Park
Image: Cascade River's lower falls

Then it was just a lot of dodging in and dodging out, slowed down by the fact that the day we came back was Free State Park Day and literally everyone and their dog was out checking out the state parks (Gooseberry State Park had an actual Dog Day event. So many good puppers!)  It took us forever to get back, but, luckily, my family was on board. The only bummer/hassle was an extremely slow waitress at Betty's Pies. It seems a little bit... intentional? Like, maybe a bit homophobic? The only scar in our otherwise great day. We put a whole bunch of State Parks on our "must return to for a more serious look" list.

One park that isn't quite so far away that I really want to return to is Jay Cooke. That place looked INSANELY cool. But, I'd honestly spend several days in all of them, if I could.

So, that's all the moose fit to print.

If you want to see a better shot of moose in the wild, check out "North Woods Adventure (Part 1)" from our very first trip to Bearskin in 2010: https://lydamorehouse.dreamwidth.org/173253.html

Some cats chase mice, and some chase the tip jar. These shop cats aren't in it for the hard work. They clock in each day with one goal: collect the love, the scritches, and maybe a few coins for their purrformance. Whether perched on a checkout counter like a tiny manager or lounging in a sunbeam by the window, these kitties have mastered the art of looking busy while doing absolutely nothing.

Sure, they don't stock shelves or ring up customers, but they know how to work the room. Head boops for tips, slow blinks for sympathy, and the occasional paw swipe at your wallet. From bookstores to cafes, hardware shops to corner stores, these feline freeloaders charm their way into customers' hearts (and pockets) without lifting a paw.

After all, who can resist tipping the "employee" who stares into your soul as you fumble with your change? These cats may not take inventory, but they're pros at collecting what counts: admiration and snacks.

sistawendy: me in a Gorey vamp costume with the back of my hand to my forehead (hand staple forehead)
I somehow just found out this morning that there's to be a second Catwalk reunion this Friday. Ordinarily I'd be all over that like white on rice, but there are two problems: a) I've already agreed to help Dance move on Saturday morning, the irony here being that she was the one who told me about the Catwalk; b) my favorite vampire witch queen will not be in attendance; and c) there's a regular event, the women's Leather munch, at C.C. Attle's earlier in the evening that I wanted to check out.

I've said it before, but it bears repeating: when I am Imperatrix Mundi, I will schedule all club nights and shows to my own satisfaction. All shall love me and despair show up and groove.

After making dinner for m'boy on Saturday night, I'm sure I can think of something to do. And there's Pride a week later. Aw to the yeah.

Where do migratory birds have their home?

Below are just three screenshots from a series of 16 photos on the Instagram account of somadifusa (Laura Ortiz), of murals she and the tattoo artist Azul Luna (Instagram account azulunailustra) painted in Bogota, Colombia.

I'm captivated by these images both of traveling swallows, some bearing backpacks and baskets, some with shells on their back like hermit crabs, and of hearts that are also nests, or that morph into shells, or sprout flowers and eyes. "Home is where the heart is," or the heart makes the home

Ah, the age-old tradition of cat shaming where hoomans try (and usually fail) to guilt their furry overlords for their crimes. From knocking over your morning coffee to turning your favorite houseplant into a litter box, these cats have zero remorse. You might hang a sign around their neck that says, "I stole an entire pizza" or "I meow at 3 AM for no reason", but these felines wear their shame like a badge of honor.

No amount of sign-holding will stop your cat from living their best mischievous life. They're purrfectly aware of their chaos-causing antics and, if anything, they're plotting their next "accident" while you snap that shaming photo. Each pawsome offender you see in these pics is likely thinking, "You may shame me now, but you'll still feed me later."

Whether they've been caught red-pawed in the snack cupboard or snoozing inside your clean laundry, these cats are shameless. So grab your camera, hooman… your kitty criminal's next mugshot awaits!

Life, as we have all learned from watching David Attenborough's seminal masterpiece Planet Earth, is a struggle. From the moment of birth to the moment that a creature lays their weary head for the last time, it is a nonstop up hill struggle. And while that is not always true for the domesticated animals we keep in our homes. It is most certainly the case for the cute kittens we have in today's story.

This story is more than just a sweet feline mood booster to make you see more positivity in the world. It is stands testament to the feline spirit, for the spirit of survival and for the ability to choose to live rather than succumb to your situation. It is a story that demonstrates that size does not matter, but determination does. It screams from the rooftops to never give up on your dreams, no matter how large or small. It is a shining beacon that we should forever remember is there to light the way in our darkest hours.

Ah cat children, it has come to this. That is it folks the time has come, and it has been a long time coming, we are admitting it. Our cat children are barely anything more than fluffy freeloaders, and we have become their loyal staff. Somehow, sometime throughout the decades our roles have flipped and even as canine pawrents and their children maintain more or less the same kind of relationship..

Our crafty cats have managed to flip the tables, especially the dinner tables. Perhaps it started when cats saved feline fanatics from the black plague, or perhaps it came about in more recent years while millennials have been seeking alternative options to express their nurturing qualities. Either way, we are where we are, and we are proud to present you with this list of feline funnies of fur baby freeloaders and their loyal staff to give you a little giggle about the situation before you get smacked across the face for missing feeding time.

DEAR HARRIETTE: Over Memorial Day weekend, I hosted a small get-together at my home with my extended family. My cousin brought her 1-year-old son, who's just starting to walk and explore the world around him. He's a sweet little boy and was especially fascinated by my dog. The problem is that my dog has never been great around small children. He's anxious by nature and tends to get overstimulated easily. I usually keep him away from kids for that reason, but in the chaos of the day, I let my guard down.

At one point, before anyone could intervene, the baby startled my dog, and my dog reacted by biting him. It wasn't just a nip, either. It was a hard bite, and it left a mark. Thankfully, the injury wasn't severe, but it was enough to cause a lot of distress, especially for my cousin and her husband. My cousin was understandably upset, and while she tried to be civil about it, I could tell she was angry and hurt.

I feel so much guilt about the bite, but I'm also worried about what this means for our relationship moving forward and for my dog. I don't know how to make things right. Should I have done more to prevent the situation? How do I approach my cousin now and express how sorry I am without making things worse? -- Dog Bite
