I'm not watching the GOP debate. First of all I clean forgot it was on; I was watching a supremely depressing but well done documentary about Hiroshima on netflix instead. But even if I hadn't forgotten the last presidential circus taught me that unless an IV drip of morphine is involved*, all watching that noise will do is raise my blood pressure to spontaneous combustion. Still, I'm getting the gist of things via twitter, and the outrage and incredulity in my feed (peppered with Warren Ellis and Patton Oswald masterfully trying to out-absurd each other with their commentary) further convinces me that I'm missing nothing but fuckery.
I find myself reminded of this bit from last season's True Blood:
I sort of think if a Tea Party member straight up told the truth about their agenda for the American people, it would sound something like Mr. Edgington's speech up there.

Okay we all know what Sunday is. This is my formal announcement that I will be marking the occasion by going completely offline for the day. No social media or TV or NPR, nothing. I pretty much want to avoid as much of the wall to wall coverage of this as I can. It may be a decade later, but some bits are still too close to home (in some cases, quite literally) and this year I don't have the emotional space for the whole big 10 Years - We Did Not Forget circus that is probably going to ensue. I've made 9/11 posts in previous years; feel free to go look up those posts here or on
kjpepper; they're still pretty relevant.
* I was recovering from major abdominal surgery during the vice presidential debate; morphine made Sarah Palin kinda absurdly likable for a hot second and then she spoke and it made me want to button smash the on-demand drip..
