Ana Tijoux - "1977"
First heard: a recent episode of Breaking Bad.
My Spanish is spotty, so all I had really was the rhythm and sound of the words along with the sampling to go on. That and it went very well underneath the scene it scores.
Johnny Cash - "God Is Gonna Cut You Down"
First heard: Jeep ad
Somehow I'd managed to miss this version of the old gospel tune, which... yeah, Johnny Cash, man. That seems unforgivable. Never mind, I've heard it now, and it is pretty... yeah. Sometimes there's just no describing the Man In Black.
Interestingly enough, this is based on the same song, and yet other than the lyrics and nominally the melody? It's like siblings that look nothing alike.
Delta Rhythm Boys - "Alouette"
First Heard: Target ad
You know what, okay I learned this song in kindergarten, in French (phonetically, like you do when you're a kid) and again in French class. I still like it, but because what people don't seem to realize that the lyrics are disturbing as FUCK. I mean, it pretty much translates as "Songbird, pretty little songbird, I'M GONNA RIP ALL YOUR FEATHERS OUT." As if it ain't bad enough, the song gleefully informs its hapless avian victim what ORDER this torture is going to be executed in. "FIRST YOUR BEAK. THEN YOUR HEAD. THEN YOUR THROAT. THEN YOUR BACK. THEN YOUR TAIL. OHHHHHHHHH."
You all think I'm exaggerating. I'm not.
So yeah. I like this arrangement. It's nice and jaunty and perky... if you don't think about the lyrics too hard. Though the juxtaposition does kinda work with the somewhat cracked ad it's featured in where overcaffinated people in eye-bleedingly brightly colored clothing descend in a large hot air balloon, leap out of it, and gleefully break into and run through people's houses vandalizing their belongings with the power of Magic Color, very much in the style of how one might imagine getting mugged by a box of Crayola crayons.
Arcade Fire - "Abraham's Daughter" (it won't let me embed it)
First Heard: The Hunger Games end credits
Honestly I wasn't at all excited about the soundtrack for the movie considering the single they were promoting was Safe and Sound by TaylorShit Swift, so I mostly skipped previewing any bits of the soundtracks. So I heard this for the first time right at the point of "Rollercoaster Go Stop" at the end of the movie and boy did it ever underscore the gutpunched eeeegh feeling the movie left you with. That and I like the sort of future-militaristic sound to the song.
Iris - "Annie, Would I Lie To You?"
First Heard: Breaking with the theme above, Pandora.
I don't know how I managed to get through over a decade of going to Haven and NEVER hearing this song, so I'm gonna assume I did at some point and didn't know whom it was by, because damn. This song sounds like Apoptygma and Wolfsheim had a sparkly little perkygoth baby.
Anna Nalick - Breathe (2 am)
First Heard: Pandora
Well aware that I am probably late to the party on this one as it seems to have actually charted at some point five years ago, but goodness knows I never listen to the radio anymore.
Just kinda amuses me how much of my "new" music comes via TV shows and ads these days.
