After a shockingly quick trip on Friday to
cell23's insurance agent and a reasonably painless trip to the RMV followed by
cell23 being thoroughly and ragefully defeated by new license plates, the as yet unnamed Honda is ours. Also Friday morning while we were out car erranding the ACS came to take River to her much earned spot in the great garage in the sky. I was not expecting to get that emotional about saying our final goodbyes to a car but nonetheless, feels were had. There was a lot of history tied up in that tiny blue Kia so I guess that's unsurprising, but I'm still a little blindsided. Ah well, some of her innards will hopefully help other little cars keep on trucking, so... I don't know where I'm going with this so I'll just stop here.
But yeah... for the first time since 2010 when I had to stop driving Hanzo because I couldn't keep up with insurance, I'm actually legal to drive again, as opposed to incidentally borrowing. I waved this off as not really feeling much different than usual to
cell23 when he brought it up yesterday because the Accord still doesn't quite feel like ours yet and I'm not sure if it will ever quite feel like mine really (almost 2 years of marriage and my brain still hasn't quite wrapped itself around joint ownership of stuff yet, tbh), but it does open up some possibilities so I suppose it's different in that way. I'm gonna see, for example, if I can tweak my Friday work schedules to I can go get the kids earlier. And maybe do a little "for the fuck of it" driving to because Reasons.
Yesterday after swinging by the kid's grandfather's to pick up at least some of the bunk bed we're going to put in the kids' room, we drove down to Manchester to see
renegadethumper and
deliriumdeva. Hangouts were had, as well as some interesting culinary explorations of their area. Aside from scoring a little Jamaican comfort food (cue all of my Guyanese ancestry sneering collectively because lol unreasonable inherited prejudice), they took us to BurgerFi which is kinda like Chipotle for burgers? Which while tasty seemed to have even more of the "we cater to the sort of hipster that proudly shops exclusively at Whole Foods but isn't quite brave enough to go whole-on vegan" vibe. But the tasty made up for a lot of it, and getting to watch
cell23 eat an entire red velvet concrete and then immediately regret most of his life choices was entertaining. We then accompanied the McGurks through their entertaining warren of a former factory/warehouse turned apartment complex to take a dip in their swimming pool, which was fun up until the painful reminder of OH HAI LOOKIT HOW OUT OF SHAPE YOU ARE reminder by way of a nasty charley horse in my right calf. >_< I have GOT to start doing something by way of exercise again, this is balls.
I got to drive us home after that, because
cell23 and deliriumdeva hanging out means manditory beer consumption. After the initial 20 minutes of "Who let ME drive? WE'RE GOING TO DIE THIS WAS A BAD IDEA HALP," I managed to settle into the oddly meditative peace of a dark empty road paired with a low volume background hum of the local classic rock station. I honestly didn't realize how much I'd missed that. I also had completely forgotten the effect a long drive has on my head - when I put the car in park in our driveway/lot at the end of the night, my mental state was way better than it's been in a very long time. Clearly I have to get on the road again regularly in some capacity. Well, maybe now that the car is copacetic more visits places further away than two towns over can start happening again.
In more self-soothing sort of news,
cell23 and I have been working our way through MY CHILDHOOD EEE sorts of movies over the past few days. Thursday night I put on Coming To America while beading. Ye gods, my love for that movie. I want to write something someday about how Zamunda is basically the only black fairy tale kingdom that has ever made it into pop culture because that would be Some Essay but I don't have the brain for it yet so I'ma just squee about it. Friday night I got to snuggle in and finally watch Ghostbusters with
cell23 (because that was THE movie he watched over and over as a kid). *sigh* Egon. *moment of silence for Harold Ramis* But it was adorable watching it with him, especially the bits where he was quoting along with it. Speaking of knowing every damn line of dialogue, I'm planning on watching The Princess Bride again soon. Perhaps for extra perversity (and because I can't quite wrap my head around it being Robin Wright in both) I'll follow it up by finally finishing up House of Cards. ;) There definitely seems to be a Movies! From! Childhood! moment happening. Still on the lookout for copies of European Vacation, Christmas Vacation, The Wiz, The Addams Family (and Values), and Adventures in Babysitting on DVDswap.
Today I'm gonna try to shotgun the rest of Big Boo and not really think about this week's episode of Night Vale, which was an unexpected punch to the gut considering all the health problems we'd been having with Moonbeam this winter. Thankfully I mostly spoiled myself for it by way of
rhipowered's entry, otherwise I might have been more of a wreck, but some kitty snuggling had to happen afterward. Speaking of kitty snuggling...
I sign off with some disgusting
cell23/Moonbeam cuteness. Try not to vomit.

There is a BurgerFi near me and you have summed it up perfectly. I play "Spot the Hipster" there.
