Since July 4th proper was thoroughly rained out, they pushed the UMass fireworks to yesterday instead. So we spent an evening on a picnic blanket with the kids eating unhealthy carnival food and people watching. Also Lil'Beast deciding he was the blue statue of liberty:

It was a good evening despite me contending with some gastrointestinal pain and ick. Weirdly enough, the shaved ice had me running to the bathroom to hork it up about an hour after I drank it, but the grease and salt loaded french fries settled everything right down. cell23 said it was probably the starch and oil, I roll to disbelieve, but hey.
The sky darkened and we lamented leaving the glow sticks and necklaces home, and several of the small children wandering around the site had some pretty enviable glow/led toys on them, so I asked a passing parent where they got them, since I had a little money left to burn. I took the kids up to the booth where they were selling them and we left with both of them clutching these intense LED lightsabers with disco ball "crystal balls" at the end of the handle that threw eye-bleedingly bright lasers everywhere.

The fireworks themselves were pretty fantastic. I didn't get pictures of them because my phone died, but that was probably for the best as it just allowed me to enjoy being out there with a wiggly nine year old in my laps oohing over every bright explosion.
After we came hope the kids were pretty amped up still, so we ended up turning all the lights off in our bedroom, putting on Crystal Method, cracking into the glow stuff we forgot to bring with us to the fireworks, and letting them rave out the rest of their energy.

Apparently the swords are about the perfect weight for sword spinning, at least if you're drew. (the "blades" were too fat for my dinky fingers.) by the time we wound down the party a bit he'd gotten quite good - enough to sorta have me in a "ooh, husbeast doing pretty thing" trance though to be fair, Kidzilla was watching him all wide-eyed too. Course then one of them flew off and whapped Lil'Beast in the head, so we had to pause and kiss it better. lol.
But yeah, I'd say good day was had. Today we're heading up to Lake Wyola and joining
aersi and
verbena76 for a day out/sorta tailgate picnic. Should be fun.
