Nah. I don't play into the whole "sold out"/"jumped the shark" mentality. I will probably notice changes in the band's sound, orchestrations or lyrical tone, because those inevitably happen ("OH HAI WE KAN HAZ BUDGET") but I dont tend to stubbornly cling to an arbitrary idea of a band's "old sound," I tend to give the newer stuff a few fighting chances first. I'm rarely utterly disappointed.

Bands I like that I've seen this happen to: REM (ha ha, I still remember the general outrage that happened when Monster dropped, the haterade for that album was thick enough to slice), Ani DiFranco, CAKE, U2 (Jesus, the Zooropa hate, lol), Queen Latifah, hell, even TMBG's last few...

Now books... I do tend to get a little snotty about. I remember Potter before Pottermania, thank you very much and I really preferred it that way. I often wonder how the last few books would have turned out if they hadn't been so massively successful, because towards the end you could definitely see how the movies and fan crazies had influenced JKRs writing.
