anagramofbrat: (whip my hair)
Wellp, my hair is whippable again. It is resplendent in cherry cola yarn, which meant I had to sit through a lot of Netflix to get it done.

I started with finishing up the episode of MST3K I'd started the day before, which was The Beast of Yucca Flats. It was a fucking terrible movie and a mediocre at best episode, but it does contain my favorite ending in the entire series, where Dr. Forrester turns to TV's Frank and very gravely says "Frank... I'm going to start slapping you now, and I may never stop." Frank, also very gravely, simply replies: "Let the healing process begin." The screen fades to black and the credits roll, with the usual Love Theme punctuated at regular intervals with the sounds of vigorous slapping.

I admit, I giggled uproariously through the whole sequence. Which is exactly the same reaction I had on multiple occasions watching the tape of this episode at home and with my friends on free period in the UNIS Media Lab, because we were media techs and we could watch whatever the fuck we wanted on the the editing decks during lunch if no one was using them. Generally I brought in tapes of MST3K so we'd have something to watch other than Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend.

Yeah, my high school was fun/fucked up, shut up.

I rewatched Amelie and Chicago afterward (eee!), and then decided I should watch something I'd never seen next, so I settled on Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? Um, wow. Ain't no crazy like old lady crazy (cause old lady crazy don't stop), I tell you that. Like someone on my twitter feed remarked, it's like Psycho for the estrogen replacement set. So. True.

I would have watched a 4th movie, but got sidetracked by my neighbor needing a couple hours to vent some serious drama. Eh, the hair got done and I was sick of staring at a screen anyway.

In book news, I finished Fevre Dream, by George R. R. Martin, which turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable considering I and the rest of the waking world is pretty well sick of vampire novels. Apparently combining them with steamboats makes them okay again, who knew. I'm currently on Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, which I was warned I was going to either hate, find incredibly dull/boring/dry, or just not have the patience for, seeing as it's roughly the size of a cinderblock. Instead I rather find myself enjoying it quite a bit so far. Yeah, it's dry and requires a bit of patience, but no more than what's necessary to get through and enjoy a 19th century lit class, which I have on more than one occasion. So nyeh.

One bit made me actually laugh out loud though:

It has been remarked (by a lady infinitely cleverer than the present author) how kindly disposed the world in general feels to young people who either die or marry. Imagine then the interest that surrounded Miss Wintertowne! No young lady ever had such advantages before: for she died upon the Tuesday, was raised to life in the early hours of Wednesday morning, and was married upon the Thursday; which some people thought too much excitement for one week.

Makes me wonder if Ms. Maclean's read this one - seems the sort of thing she'd enjoy.

Half dreading tomorrow. Today, rather, since it's after midnight. It's sort of the first day of Back to Life, Back to Reality, Back to the Here and Now after the holidays, and I've got a long hard year ahead. But I have some goals to work towards, just need to start working on them and not let myself stop whatever comes up along the way. Easy right? hahahaha. Yeah. About that. But seriously. 2011? Scott Pilgrim Andee Browne Gets It Together. Least that's what I'm going for.

Anyway, my arms are sore from braiding all damn day so shower and bed for me. Later, Interbutts.

See, I LOVE Jonathan Strange et al. I got to read it as an ARC, and then when it came out and all my friends were freaking out I got to be all casual "oh that? I read it a few months ago. It's really good, isn't it?" I didn't find it dry at all, but like you say, I'm used to that style.

I prefer when MST3K did riffs on the school shorts from the 1950s like "A Date With Your Family." I love the part where they had all the men in the family, Dad and the two boys, one a teen and the other looked like he was six in the living room on the couch while the womenfolk were fulfilling their gender roles in the kitchen.

Six year old riff: Father, I had a feeling today.
Dad riff: Well, don't let it happen again, son.

I also love the short about hygiene and its closing riff, "And remember, when you touch yourself, the saints cry. God bless!"
