anagramofbrat: (what is love?)
I'm at the office! I pretty much decided that if I'm going to hang onto the car until tomorrow, there was no point in letting it sit in [livejournal.com profile] cell23's driveway while I'm paying for it, so to work I went. I missed my Hess trucks so that was a good choice.

I don't know, it being Monday it feels like I have a whole slew of new things to worry about... work of course. Doc tomorrow. Am probably going back to NY Wednesday morning, which is a little bit le sad, but it's not like I won't be back up this weekend for moving and *gasp* car shopping. I have no idea how to even start THAT whole project - can anyone give me an idea on what I have to do beforehand insurancewise? crap, I keep forgetting to buy a triple A membership... *whine* being a grown-up is HARD. This move still doesn't seem real yet.

Back to trying not to eat like crap... which means black coffee and salad. About to walk down to the Stop and Shop salad bar actually. Actually rather looking forward to borrowing Cara's dumbells so I can restart working on putting some muscle back in my arms. Course, hauling both hers and my crap into new place ought to help. :) I also need to figure out what I need to be taking again supplement-wise - I have a nasty suspicion that a good part of why some of my health and headspace went wonky is because I went off of various things when I moved down to NY. If anything I need back on the iron and calcium at the very least... maybe the vitamin E because my skin got awful pretty when I was on it.

My head's in weird emotional space, but for once it's good weird as opposed to bad weird. Well, mostly. We'll see how it all processes out and what I manage to get done. Vacation's over... back to life, back to reality... :)

This entry mostly composed as an excuse to post dragons:

Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

Would super highly recommend either a Honda or Toyota, as they hold up for a very, very long time and tend to get good gas mileage. Toyotas are better for not breaking often and being generally cheap to fix when they do, but Hondas are a bit better at holding their value. I've had my Civic for almost 3 years and the value has dropped maybe $500.
Don't buy new if your credit will allow you to buy used. You save tons of money by letting someone else eat the new car depreciation. But have a mechanic look at a used one you're serious about before handing over cash.
Insurance: when you're ready to begin srs car shopping, give 'em a call and tell them so, and they'll set you up. In Texas, anyway, you have to have insurance before you can drive a car off the lot.

Depends on the state and the dealership, but you should, in theory, be able to order insurance on the spot once you are in the process of buying the car. When I was buying the Slackmobile Mk. 2, I called Progressive from the dealership and had them fax the proof of insurance on the spot. I believe they might need the car's VIN, make, and model before they'll actually insure it, and you might get insurance discounts for certain features of the car.

Also, AAA coverage is anything but mandatory. If you know how to change a tire, jump start a car, and have a friend you can call to pick you up in case of emergency, they're a waste of money, IMHO. So far I've been driving for 14 years, and have yet to regret never getting AAA.

yeah, I'm with Allan on this one. I've known too many people that have been entirely competant on tire changing and jump starting be real happy for AAA when what's needed is towing. That shit's expensive. Plus the ghost of my mother would be horrified if I didn't.

I have to disagree. AAA pays for itself the first time you have to get towed.

Whalen Insurance on King St. is a local insurance broker. We got our home and auto insurance through them, and they're super nice and helpful and translate insurancese into English for you.

In contrast with [livejournal.com profile] harinezumi, I have and appreciate AAA for one reason only - towing. When my Camaro pissed her coolant into the engine block because the mechanics forgot to attach the hose properly, getting her from Sunderland to West Springfield without hassle so I could administer a verbal smack down was much appreciated.

Give me a call and I'll walk you through anything you need to know. 508 254-2756. I get out of work around 5. Even if you're not looking for a Honda, I know the area dealers ok and I'll give you some protips on how you know you're being ripped off.

Having AAA also drops down the cost of your insurance here. So it is worth it.

It also gets you discounts in a surprising number of places as well.
