So you know that song that's been everywhere for the past year that goes all OOOOHHHHHH sometiiiiiiiiimes I get a good feeling? (I'm a little late to the party okay?) So it finally wormed its way into my head deep enough so that I took a minute to go look for it this evening.
I certainly wasn't expecting a rabbit hole of musical reference, sampling and collaboration, but I'm glad I sat with youtube for the 20 minutes it took to thread my way backwards.
The bit that everyone knows above is a sample from the very beginning of an old Etta James track called "Something's Got a Hold on Me."
Around 2008 a DJ called pretty lights used the sample in their song "Finally Moving"
There's also a later remix incorporating James Brown's "I Feel Good" that works very well.
And then we get into the two songs released last year. First Avicii's "Le7els" which does sound faintly like something you would find on a video game soundtrack which is why it ended up in the first trailer for Wreck-It Ralph. (Who else is unreasonably excited about that movie?)
And ending of course, with Flo Rida's "Good Feeling"
It's like someone played Telephone with Etta James. I rather love it. This version also goes great with other TODAY IS AWESOME! LIVE IT! songs like Ice Cube's "Today was a good day" and Psy's "Right Now" to which I've been listening to even more obsessively than "Gangnam Style."
Anyway, not a bad 20 minute musical trip to take. Course the problem is I was looking for one song to get and now I have 5. First world problems.
