Back from the big bad city. It was an oddly low key and relaxing weekend.

Saturday:
  • Took the usual way too long to extract myself from bed and [livejournal.com profile] cell23. Bed is comfy and boy was heading to DC until Tuesday, so major glomph factor is entirely excusable.

  • Long uneventful drive down to NY. Much loud music was played, much talking to myself was had, moments of brilliance were experienced. New York roads, by the way, SUCK. I really have to wonder if I busted my strut on that first trip down to the city rather than tooling around in Westfield. Seriously, bump thump BANG all through Queens. I think I know the way home pretty thoroughly now, no swerving to change exits or getting lost was had this time. Woot. Good drive was capped by ONCE AGAIN arriving to find a large parking space directly in front of the house waiting for me. Also? I think i have the hang of parallel parking finally.Only took me almost a year AFTER getting my license... *facepalm*

  • Walked into the house to be greeted enthusiastically by the cat and a bemused Dad, who, by the way HAD COMPLETELY FORGOTTEN I WAS COMING. (He also didn't notice the haircut until it was pointed out to him.) Spent the day hanging out with him, complimenting his new found hobby of DELICIOUS sandwich assembly, and cracking open another one of Cousin Lyn's seriously rich West Indian rum cakes. Seriously, you have a bite of this stuff and you WILL fail a breathalyser. I shit you not.

  • Dear USA: I love you. I love SVU. Please show DIFFERENT, preferably NEWER episodes during SVU marathons. I've seen the Second Life one and the Williams Syndrome kid one OVER 9000 way too many times.

  • Dear Direct TV: Please stop enabling Dad's movie habit. He's an old man and needs to sleep sometimes. Offering him every movie channel under God in a bundle is really not helping.

  • 365: Kitty playing with me through the 2nd Floor bannister.

  • Long but good conversations online with [livejournal.com profile] booboo_berr and [livejournal.com profile] chirping_monkey. Realized that while I love my iPod, all I can think about is kielbasa sausage I really need to look into getting a real replacement laptop to travel with at some point. I would have really liked to have been able to get some work or something productive done. That and reading shit on the iPod will give a woman eyestrain.

Sunday:

  • I really really love love love being able to wash my hair with impunity again. Also found a mostly full bottle of oil cream moisturizer in Mom's room. Score! And yes, I really really did sing "JUST LET YOUR SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUL GLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO when I was slathering it into my hair this morning, lol. Seriously though, I didn't realize how much I missed black hair products. The smell alone is super delicious.

  • Dad was fully intent on sending me off to do errands while he had me, lol. I don't know why I have no problems hefting a forty pound bag of cat litter five blocks in New York, and yet carrying half that weight of laundry down the block to Suds here is a monumental pain in the ass to the point where I've given up and started driving it over there. Granted there's way more ice between Boobyhaven and the laundromat than there is between The House and the grocery store, but still, come on!

  • Had fun listening to Dad fuss at the oil man about rising prices, and then sit him down to learn him some stock tips. I am always amused/astounded by how everyone who meets the old man loves/adopts him.

  • Found a framed picture of Mom with the exact haircut I have now. Was more than a little spooked, but not enough to keep me from finding another copy lying around the house and bringing it home. And yes, I've pretty much confirmed that I did inherit her hair finally.

  • read [livejournal.com profile] nounsandverbs' entry about the Brooklyn Flea, decided to go and mine it for pictures. Didn't buy anything other than some Greek food and a brownie (both were superdelicious) but it got me out of The House... and I did get some good pics on the trip including today's 365:

Reminded me SO MUCH of the Floating Market from Neverwhere. Also the Williamsburg Bank Tower? Total architecture porn. For serious. They really really don't make buildings like that anymore. I've avoided it for years because the dentist that caused my phobia of them actually still practices at the top of it.

The flea by the way, if anyone's in New York and interested, began this weekend and will be running every weekend at that location from here until March. Go if you can. Lots of good stuff.

  • In opportunity lost due to attack of the crippling shys news... I really wish I'd actually asked that guy on the subway why he had one of the florescent green plastic monkeys from the Barrel of Monkeys game sewn to his jacket....

  • Was summarily hustled out of the door by Dad when I got back on the account that "I want you home at a reasonable hour, not driving around in the dark!" Parents, I tell you. Was bundled off with treats - some of the aforementioned rum cake, a giant jar of Guyanese pepper sauce for [livejournal.com profile] cell23 and directions for how to keep it perpetuating, a huge thing of direct-from-Columbia coffee, and the Christmas present he was holding hostage, whichturned out to be a 49 piece set of really really nice company dishes. Like with serving platter, tea/coffee service and salt/pepper shakers, not to mention like six place settings and everything. *boggle* Dad even picked out a pattern that he thought would suit me - it's got sort of greek-ish geometric patterns on it, as opposed to big froufy gold rimmed flowers or something.

I am SO throwing a dinner party.

  • the only significant thing about the drive back is that my tape adapter REFUSED to work for the first half of the trip owing to a stuck gear. Listened to 1010WINS until the signal started to give out, said "fuck this", pulled over at a service stop and spent twenty minutes taking the stupid adapter apart with my swiss army knife and reseating the stupid slipped gear. Sometimes a girl NEEDS loud silly techno to drive to, okay?

So home, chilling out, working on my picasa albums, thinking about money and TEH FYOOCHURRR and being sleepy. (And cold, grr, stupid winter.) Probably gonna crash soon and head to work early tomorrow, since I still have a holy god crapton to do there in the morning. Hopefully I will not have the recurring nightmare I've been having the past four nights of violently rearending other cars on the highway. >_<

That would be pretty awesome, you gotta admit... not only having a switchblade, but being able to fix stuff with it.

I wonder if they make a Swiss Army Switchblade? You'd have to be really careful about which button you press. *flick* NAILFILE *flick* SCISSORS *flick* TOOTHPICK *flick* *flick* *flick* "Where's the effing KNIFE?! GAH."

You wouldn't so happen to have a recipe for that delicious rum cake, would you?

alas no. Caribbean women guard their recipes like the Crown Jewels, I'm afraid. Wouldn't be surprised if some are buried with their recipe files, it's that bad.
