Ever read something that just makes you feel whacked about the head and shoulders with sledgehammers of truthiness? Yeah, I just read [livejournal.com profile] tacit's latest entry and boy howdy am I in a PLACE right now. I need to go have some serious thinks now, yikes. Maybe with a side of angst. :/

By the way, if the amusing exploits and intensely thought provoking essays of a poly atheist kinkster geek appeal to you, I strongly recommend friending [livejournal.com profile] tacit either here or on twitter (he's @franklinveaux there). And regardless, give his latest post on couple privilege and how it comes into play in poly relationships a read, even if you're monogamous. It will certainly make you think.

When I was a kid, I used to read Webster's Nth Collegiate dictionary in the bathroom. Really. Today's word, I think is as follows.

Gobsmacked

Etymology

As if smacked (“hit”) in the gob (“mouth (Irish / Scottish gaelic)”).

Attested since 1980s, from Northern English dialect, particularly Liverpool, popularized via television.

Adjective

gobsmacked (comparative more gobsmackedsuperlative most gobsmacked)

  1. (chiefly UK, slang) Flabbergastedastoundedspeechlessoverawed.
    • 1989, Glenn Frankel, "Salman Rushdie's Life on the Run," Los Angeles Times, 7 Aug.,
We were as appalled and stunned and confused and gobsmacked (punched on the mouth) as anyone else.
    • 2008, Caroline Mallan, "Linwood Barclay novel wins a plug on key UK book list," Toronto Star, 16 Jun., p. A2,
"I guess the word would be gobsmacked," Barclay said, of his reaction. "I am stunned."

Food for thought (hattip to [livejournal.com profile] nounsandverbs):
Relationships are wonderful things, but in order to be successful at them, it's important to have a good sense of self. Without that, it's easy to either lose oneself in the relationship or to become so insecure and demanding that one drives a wedge into the relationship.
Quoted from a really quite sensible entry on what does and doesn't work in a poly relationship written by [livejournal.com profile] zoethe. Certainly been on both sides of this coin; it's not cute. Worth the read.

Food for giggles: If you aren't already on [livejournal.com profile] metaquotes, [livejournal.com profile] horizonchaser's goose has been having... problems... with metal. I read it several hours ago and I'm still giggling.

Also apparently Scott Pilgrim #6 dropped today. It would be on a broke day. GRRR. Course, I still need to pick up #5 (even though I've read it.)

While metaquoting [livejournal.com profile] masteradept, I decided I finally needed a poly icon, but not one based on the infinite heart logo (while i appreciate the concept, I'm unfortunately completely soured on it). Found this one here and love it hard enough that I may get a t-shirt or something from this woman's cafe press.

Hey, I'm a sucker for geometric things. And rainbows. And hearts. I'M A GIRL THAT LIKES MATH OKAY
