Adventures in new software
May. 12th, 2010 10:31 amAuditioning Digsby for today. I'm always on the lookout for things that will consolidate as many bits of software as possible, so I figured what the hell right?
DO LIKE:
Pretty much on par with pidgin in terms of consolidating contacts.
The fact that I can put in all of my gmail accounts and Twitter so I can get them out of my FF taskbar is a plus.
Has a "listening to" function. Hey sometimes I like to broadcast my weird taste in music.
DO NOT LIKE:
Does not tell me when there are new posts on Twitter. I have to mouse over to check.
Way too much emphasis during setup on "Promote us to all your friends."
Installation of an ask.com toolbar that I didn't see an option to turn off during setup (possible that I just missed it.)
The simplest skin they offer still looks far too much like Trillian.
Realizing support for voice/video chat on any platform is far too much to hope for, but no support even for Skype IM? *sigh*
ETA: huh apparently it does support voice/video chat. But no skype? Waaaaaaaah.
Some kind of Facebook authentication error keeps happening so that finally it just became easier to disable it. Facebook chat still works though.
VERDICT SO FAR:
I'm not overly impressed. Facebook integration honestly is decreasingly important to me as other than a lingering Metropolis addiction I mostly just sign on to keep up with folks who don't already have LJ/Twitter. There's also the bit where they're getting even sketchier in their TOS/Privacy policies - though I'm kinda whatever about my own personal privacy, I'm not exactly kosher with "personalized advertising" either.
Overall, meh. Thinking it'll be back to the purple bird tomorrow.
