Guys, all silliness and craft blather aside, something important to me. Listen up.

There's a group of people in NY very dear to me though I have not seen them in a while called Harmony House. I may have mentioned a while ago that one of their number (

purpura) has been having a rough time of it since the birth of her second child this past summer, and very very long story short, she's being prepped for a heart transplant as I post this.

If you're the praying sort or even just the think wonderful happy thoughts sort, send up one for

purpura, for the rest of Harmony House (they are a wonderfu, intelligent and fun bunch of people/kids), and lastly for the person lost whose heart

purpura is now receiving.

And if you haven't before, seriously consider becoming an organ donor.

I didn't bother blacking out either of my sites - I get so little traffic to either that it would be about as useful as an OccupyPainfullyLiberalCollegeTown protest around here. But I am watching the internet today with a fair amount of interest.

One thing that's caught my attention is a surprising amount of backlash against Wikipedia. Seriously, go check out the #wtfwikipedia tag. Lots of kids bitching about not being able to get their homework done, and as a friend of mine pointed out, the closer the deadline, the more capital letters and vitriol used.

This amuses me for many reasons. a) you DO have other resources other than wikipedia for research. Pick up a book, maybe. Support your local library. Do an actual google search. It's not the end of the world. b) This SOPA/PIPA issue is waaaaaaay more important than your individual term paper, and if either go through you may lose Wikipedia for more than just today. WHAT WILL YOU DO THEN?! c) Wikipedia is still up in all languages other than English. So if you're not a "THIS IS AMERICA - SPEAK ENGLISH AND ONLY ENGLISH OR GTFO" sort of asshole and have the ability, either through learning at home or through language education, to read in another language, you can still get your shit done.

Sigh. People are dumb, y'all.

Anyway. Call your congresspeople (wikipedia has a little form where you punch in your zip code and it gives you a list), or if you're lazy and don't like the phone, sign the Google petition. Meanwhile I may have to cope with the lack of reddit today by actually getting something productive done. Horror of horrors.

Okay, so I don't usually do this, but this is an issue near and dear to me and this is getting ~~very little~~ no attention in the mainstream media.

Mississippi is voting on November 8th on whether to pass Amendment 26, the "Personhood Amendment". This amendment would grant fertilized eggs and fetuses personhood status.

Putting aside the contentious issue of abortion, this would effectively outlaw birth control and criminalize women who have miscarriages. This is not a good thing.

Jackson Women's Health Organization is the only place women can get abortions in the entire state, and they are trying to launch a grassroots movement against this amendment. This doesn't just apply to Mississippi, though, as Personhood USA, the group that introduced this amendment, is trying to introduce identical amendments in all 50 states.

What's more, in Mississippi, this amendment is expected to pass. It even has Mississippi Democrats, including the Attorney General, Jim Hood, backing it.

The reason I'm posting this here is because I made a meager donation to the Jackson Women's Health Organization this morning, and I received a personal email back hours later - on a Sunday - thanking me and noting that I'm one of the first "outside" people to contribute.

So if you sometimes pass on political action because you figure that enough other people will do something to make a difference, make an exception on this one. My RSS reader is near silent on this amendment. I only found out about it through a feminist blog. The mainstream media is not reporting on it.

If there is ever a time to donate or send a letter in protest, this would be it.

What to do?

- Read up on it. Wake Up, Mississippi is the home of the grassroots effort to fight this amendment. Daily Kos also has a thorough story on it.

- If you can afford it, you can donate at the site's link.

- You can contact the Democratic National Committee to see why more of our representatives aren't speaking out against this.

- Like this Facebook page to help spread awareness.

For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

nieceytee is in a really bad spot right now. Some of you may remember her as the woman who raised an INSANE amount of money in a short amount of time last May to keep her downstairs neighbor from both getting evicted and at the same time losing custody of her child. In sort of a "no good deed goes unpunished" sort of twist, she is now facing eviction herself.

She's awesome, guys. I know perhaps a little too well myself that times and purse-strings are tight for everyone right now. But if you can and want to, help a sistah out.
